Bénédictine traces its origins to 1510 when Benedictine monk Dom Bernardo Vincelli created the recipe at Fécamp Abbey in Normandy. The letters D.O.M. (Deo Optimo Maximo - 'To God, most good, most great') reflect its monastic heritage.
The original recipe, comprising 27 herbs and spices from across the world, was nearly lost during the French Revolution when the abbey was destroyed. It was rediscovered in 1863 by Alexandre Le Grand, who spent a year deciphering and perfecting the formula.
