Manhattan Magic – The Classic Cocktail

The Manhattan cocktail is one of those rare drinks that embodies sophistication in just a few sips. It’s all about balance – the right mix of *Whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, and Bitters gives it that unmistakable richness, while a garnish of cherries or an orange twist adds the perfect finishing touch.

Sip by sip, the Manhattan reveals a flavour profile that’s both sweet and slightly bitter, with a warmth that lingers on the palate. Unlike many other cocktails that aim to be easy-going, the Manhattan is unapologetically bold, standing its ground among simpler drinks and showing off its complex layers.

Learned to make these from an old bartender in NYC. His tip: chill the glass first and stir the drink until the mixing glass feels cold to touch. Makes for the perfect temperature every time.

A proper Manhattan requires good bourbon - I use one with higher rye content for more spice notes. The small amount of vermouth here is perfect, just enough to add complexity without drowning out the whiskey.

Such an elegant cocktail! I've tried it with different bourbons - each brings its own character. Just make sure to stir long enough to get proper dilution and always strain well to avoid ice shards.

Keep your vermouth in the fridge and it'll last longer! This recipe has the perfect balance - I tried other ratios but always come back to this one. The Angostura bitters really tie everything together beautifully.

The 4:1 ratio of bourbon to vermouth is spot on! A lot of recipes use too much vermouth which overwhelms the bourbon. Don't forget to stir (never shake) and always serve it with a good cherry - no bright red maraschinos please!
